Chapter Seven

The Norton-Bedford Trophy

As was usually the case, after lunch everyone was back to laughing and joking, and Tali seemed to have forgotten all about the drawing on her back, which was quickly covered by another layer of sun cream by their mum, probably too late.

Tasha kept to the shade, reading a book she’d gotten for her birthday, and was pleased to see Jed was also reading.

“I didn’t know you read,” Tasha said to him as her grandmother, parents and sisters headed down to the water, leaving Sean and Jai behind, engaged in an oddly serious conversation about the moon landing conspiracy theories.

“I didn’t know you read either,” he quipped back.

“I just mean, you don’t see as many men reading on holiday, you know?” Tasha offered.

“What? That’s a strange stereotype to still believe in your late twenties.”

“No, it’s just based on the people I know.”

“Who?” Jed enquired, placing his book down on his lap and regarding her skeptically. “Because I’d say it was a pretty even spread amongst my friends.”

“Well, take Mara’s roommates-”

“-Top grade morons-”

“Yes, but none of them read.”

“I’m not sure any of them can read,” Jed joked.

“Ha-ha. Are you really saying you think as many of your male friends read as female friends?”

“I’d say so,” Jed nodded.

“Alright, hang on” Tasha grinned, leaning forward in her deck chair. “Jai, Sean – do you like reading?”

“What, like books or something?” Sean raised his shoulders half-heartedly. “Like in school?”

“Sean, Jai, Lewis, Si and Kris are hardly a good sample of the average guy,” Jed crossed his arms.

“I read,” Jai piped up.

“See!” Jed said. “What are you reading at the moment, Jai?”

“The Economic Discourse on Wind Turbines in the South West of The Netherlands: A Case Study in the Relationship between Rural Peoples and their Wind by Professor Ecton Rema,” Jai smiled. “It’s a real page turner.”

Tasha stifled a snort of laughter as Jed’s face crumpled.

“And what about fiction?” Tasha asked.

“Oh, that’s not really my cup of tea,” Jai said. “I find it quite boring.”

Tasha turned away as her shoulders jumped with suppressed laughter.

“I buy car mags sometimes,” Sean said pensively. “Especially if there’s a girl on the front.”

“And Good Housekeeping is always full of fun tips,” Jai said earnestly. “That’s how I learnt to reuse my old mason jars to store my rooibos tea.”

“Oh, is that the one in the bags with the strings on them?” Sean asked. “The ones you get in posh hotels?”

“Let’s leave them to it,” Tasha smirked as the conversation continued. She beckoned for Jed to follow her down to the water. “It will be nice and cool in there.”

“Okay,” Jed nodded.

“Aren’t you going to take your clothes off?” Tasha asked, noticing he was wearing shorts and a t-shirt over his trunks.

“Um…” Jed shrugged.

“Weren’t you saying how many compromising situations you’d seen me in over the years? Time to get some skin out, Rowley.”

“It’s like being back in P.E,” Jed groaned.

“What are you afraid of?” Tasha assured him, “No one’s going to judge you.”

He hesitated for a moment, and shook his head decisively before whipping off his short and top.
